Lidl Baturrica Tarragona Gran Reserva

This is the second (of five) reviews of cheap Lidl wine that I bought last week.

Name: Baturrica Tarragona Gran Reserva
Year: 2002
Price: €6-99
Notes: Typical oaky Rioja-ish wine. Very pleasant and good value. You'd expect to pay €12/€14 for the equivalent Rioja
Rating: 6/10

  1. Drank it last night, and agree with you. In Austria, it's only € 2.99, which is OK by our standards.

Note what you say about the sangiovese and montepulciano, and look forward to the other two. Lidl is just starting in Vienna, so I'm also testing the waters.

Our other el cheapo supermarket chain is Hofer -- do you have those in Eire?

    Cheers

  2. Hi David - thanks for the comment. Do try the Vino Nobile de Motepulciano reviewed last week - its definitely worth a punt.
We dont have Hofer here, but we do have Aldi - am going to try there soon and you'll see the results here...

  3. It is a very fine wine, the first time I treied it I thought it was going to be like drinking diesel or something LOL but it was beautiful. I've sampled a lot of bottles of it since.

a genuine quality wine great value for your money.

I once sampled a Bulgarian wine from aldi now that actualy tasted like diesel or something vile, I had to pour it down the sink LOL

  4. I bought Baturrica Tattagona Reserva 2004 in Lidl in Poland. It was very cheap, about 3€. For this price very good.

  5. We LOVE this wine. I am living in the Dordogne Valley of France where there are a lot of great wines. but I must say I like this the best for the price.

Does anyone know how to order it?

  6. I just got one today, but I don't know where it is bought. I live in Croatia, Europe.
Can't wait to try it! :)

  7. Gotta say i'm not a huge fan of this taste. I usually drink french wines. I don't know how to describe the finish of this wine. Maybe I got a bad bottle.

  8. I received today a bottle of this wine as a gift. It came from an acquaintance, for whom I worked for free for two hours.
I am a bit disappointed to see how cheap it is!!!! Is my labour worth just 1 euro 50 cents per hour??? :)
But on the other hand the taste is good!!!
    Really good!
    Thanks Lidl!!

  9. The last 3 bottles of Baturrica Tarragona Gran Reserva opened in the last two weeks all had miserable crumbling corks.
I have stopped buying this line.

  10. Beware of baturrica. It's like DIESEL.

  11. 2 things
    - I tasted this a year and a half ago and as one commenter pointed out the corks are crumbling, so perhaps it is now in decline.
    - The Reserva 2004 (as opposed to the Gran Reserva 2002) I tried was awful

As always your mileage may vary...

  14. I used to live in Madrid, Spain. We brought about 200 bottles of wine with us when we moved to Hawaii. My wife bought a case of Baturrica 2002 reserva(not Gran Reserva) at Lidl before we left. I just opened the first bottle today
(4/28/2011). She thinks she paid 2 euros a bottle back in 2007. It is definatly a cheap wine, but drinkable.

  16. I bought a bottle of this wine 2005 on offer at Lidl at £4 (UK) - a £1 off the usual price.
It went down a treat with a bowl of Spaghetti Bolognese, in fact I enjoyed it so much that that I returned to Lidl today (09/11/2001)and bought another six bottles!
This is a lovely wine for the price, in fact forget the price, it's a lovely wine.
My advice is to stop over analysing wine and just enjoy.

  17. Dreadful, has a nose like an oil change and tastes about the same. Nice label though and slim bottle, all it needs is a candle and it won't have been a complete waste of money.

  18. Opened a bottle of the 2005 gran reserva 7 days ago.Found to be a very pleasant ,unpretentious drink.Sampled the bottle again after 3 days and found the flavour had improved and had become much smoother and flavoursome. I've found that after opening , a lot of cheap Reds get very harsh and the Tannin taste increases. Not so with this bottle.
Returned to it today,7 Days later, and found it to have improved even more.Unfortunately there were only two glasses left in the bottle so I won't be able to give any further reports.
I'am definately no wine expert, and only drink the stuff because I like the taste.I found this to be very, very good, irrespective of the price, and would highly recommend it.
I shall seek out my local branch of Lidl tomorrow and carry out further tasting of the wine, obviously only for the greater good, and shall report my findings in seven days.
Just in case I had an unusually good bottle I had better buy more than one.
    Bogwopit.

    1. Baturrica Gran Reserve 2006 was promoted in Lidl in Sofia, BG, for the fabulous price of BGN 3,79 (less than EUR 2,00). If one buys wine for this price, he should be ready to get disappointed at the content. I tasted it just after opening and the first impression was nothing - tasteless and grey as sparrow. After 1,5 hour the wine had enough time to come in touch with air and the impression was already a different one. For such a price the wine is a good buy!

  24. Just trying the 2007 Gran Reserva - honest & not unpleasant taste, but VERY cinnamony, almost like half-mulled wine. Will leave it open for a day to see if it calms down.

    1. Did the cinnamony note calm down after a few days?
